Ishiguro's writing has a dreamy quality. The Unconsoled takes this to the next level by putting you in a dream for 600 pages. It feels like the summation of a lifetime of work, but in fact it's one of his earliest.
Pro tip: if you're confused, just keep reading. Like a dream, the individual details don't make sense, but the emotions and themes still show through.
