Because that's the only way you'll win an award. An author that frequently pulls lower prizes in these awards dumped his main characters to follow around teens who are gay, trans, and one that "escaped from a trans conversation camp with a 30% suicide rate".
He switched to a female lead who's power is that now that she's over 35 she feels invisible and that makes her actually invisible. Also autism everywhere everyone has fricking autism now.
