The thesis itself is not so much notable in its ridiculousness as much as how mundane its claims are once the edifice of social justice jargon gets stripped away:
People don't like bad smells.
Avoidance of bad smells is correlated with better social and economic standing.
Groups facing discrimination often have their smell used as a justification.
These group/smell associations are present in fiction, reinforcing the existing social norms.

Most fighting game tournaments I've been to have been mostly normal dudes either in college or gainfully employed, a couple of shy/quirky but more or less friendly and inoffensive nerds, and maybe 1 or 2 degenerate slobs who smell like sewage.
The one smash bros tourney I was dragged to by a friend was the mirror of that, and both of the notably smelly guys from the street fighter tourneys were there. The venue owners wife went and bought one of those autospraying air fresheners because it was so bad.
