Yeah, best to stick to only the ones that have been tested in court. Of course for really high value targets (who are being told not to use VPNs, not everyone else) that might not be good enough because it might be a state sponsored operation.

Mullvad is really good, I used it with the cash-by-mail payment option which was pretty cool. I know they also offer payment by crypto but I'd have to ID myself at an exchange so I chose not to. Turned out cheaper than I thought as well, thought to be fair I have no idea how much other VPNs cost so maybe it's normal price for the service and it's just me who was unaware

There's also another option of just renting a server and setting up your own VPN if you feel like it, might be even cheaper that way +you could probably combine it with extra services like a custom mail server or personal cloud since you're not gonna be using that much computational power
