The way it was always explained to me is that you get to create your own universe. And yes you become a god. I guess the "get your own planet" thing comes from that perhaps there's one planet in your universe that you hang out on.
The godhood thing is more detailed. Essentially Mormons teach that God and his wife Mrs. God were up there in heaven having babies. They come out as spirits only. God and Mrs. God are a type of super being that is the perfected union of a spirit and physical body, kind of like the Urskeks at the end of The Dark Crystal.
So God presented his plan to send all the spirit kids to Earth to be born into bodies and to see how they acted, and if they did good then they get to come back and be Urskeks like God and Mrs. God.
God asked for a volunteer to be the Savior of the Earth so that people can repent of their sins. Jesus, the oldest brother, volunteered and said he would do the work and give the glory to God. Lucifer, another brother, argued that there shouldn't be any free will to guarantee that everyone makes it back and wanted the glory given to him.
This started a war in heaven. 2/3 of heaven sided with God and Jesus and the other 1/3 of heaven sided with Lucifer. They got kicked out to Outer Darkness.
So the rest is being born on earth and trying to be a good Mormon in order to get a body and have it made perfected like God and then repeating the same thing in your own universe. So there could be a long line of parental gods going to infinity in each direction.
