US & South Korea agree on how much they pay for US troops there

The American argument is that our guys are there to protect Korea, so the Koreans should pay for at least some of that.

The Korean argument I imagine is that we'd still be paying these guys, doing maintenance on their equipment, etc. if they were based in America, so they shouldn't have to pay that part.

Under the 12th SMA, which will last until 2030, South Korea will pay 1.52 trillion won (US$1.19 billion) in 2026, up 8.3 percent from 1.4 trillion won in 2025.

Is that the right number? I got no idea, I just know it's a big number.

They rushed to sign this before the election because Trump has been making vague threats about turning our military into mercenaries and charging huge amounts of money to countries where we have bases. It's kind of weird that he'd go after Korea since they already pay us a lot and they actually live up to their commitments to defend themselves, unlike the entire continent of Europe for example. They're serious enough about it that they still draft half of men. Imagine how many million troops the Europeans could raise if they did that.

couldn't really get a good pic of the stage, Oprah was on earlier, I left when they just cut to a live stream of Minnesota

Overall people were pretty cheery :marseyhope: but the lines were huge and moving slow to get in. Also there were really long gaps between people coming on stage which sucked a lot of energy out of the crowd. I went home to watch sports and eat some frozen pizza :marseypizzaslice:

Los campesinos se están rebelando

PAIPORTA, Spain (AP) — A crowd of enraged survivors hurled clots of mud left by storm-spawned flooding at the Spanish royal couple on Sunday during their first visit to the epicenter of their nation's deadliest natural disaster in living memory.

Spain's national broadcaster reported that the barrage included a few rocks and other objects and that two bodyguards were treated for injuries. One could be seen with a bloody wound on his forehead.

It was an unprecedented incident for a royal house that carefully crafts the image of monarchs adored by their country of more than 48 million people.

Spanish fury has been unleashed against a state that appears overwhelmed and unable to meet the needs of people used to living under an effective government.

Officials also rushed Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez from the scene soon after his contingent started to walk the mud-covered streets of one of the hardest-hit areas, where over 60 people perished and thousands of lives were shattered. The disaster fueled by climate change killed at least 205 people in eastern Spain.

"Get out! Get out!" and "Killers!" the crowd in the town of Paiporta shouted, among other insults. Bodyguards opened umbrellas to protect the royals and other officials from the tossed muck.

Police had to step in, some officers on horseback, to keep back the crowd of several dozen, some wielding shovels and poles.
