What did they look like? did they look like ricecels? I heard that a large percentage of Afghan refugees living in the west are actually non-Pashtun ethnic minorities who are often Shia Muslims that the Taliban hates, such as the Hazaras who are of Mongol origin, hence why they look more Asian rather than mayo, as well as Turkic minorities like Uzbeks and Turkmen.
This reminds me of how the majority of Mexicans who try to cross the border to the US often come from the poverty-stricken jungle regions in the far south of the country, that are majority indigenous and have little Europoor admixture, hence why this view of Mexicans as Native American-esque short brown people became a thing in burger pop culture, when most Mexicans in the north are not much physically different from the average amerimutt.

If I recall correctly, Tajiks are pretty much Persians, and the Tajik language is just a Persian dialect, but due to artificial borders and Russo-Soyviet
agendaposting, Iranians and Tajiks are now considered two separate peoples and languages, like the whole Romania-Moldova situation.

Dari and Tajik are mutually intelligible. When I hear someone talking in Dari it just sounds like caffeinated Persian to me. The entire modern day Central Asia is more or less a remnant of the Soviets, in the past the Turkic and Persian differences were lifestyle more than ethnic… communism ruins everything

The area that is modern-day Tajikistan was partially made a puppet state of the Russian Empire (Emirate of Bukhara) and partially annex onto Russia itself as a part of The Great Game way before the USSR existed, and the Russian Empire was already embarking on campaigns of "artificial ethnic separation" (dunno if a word for this exists so here is my neurodivergent take on it) as a divide-and-conquer strategy, to maintain Russian economic and geopolitical control of these areas, something similar happened between Romania and Moldova like how I already said.
