:marseycountry: US Country Music is surprisingly popular in rural Sub-Saharan Africa! :marseyvibing:

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1542564697353895941.html

Hacker News thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31939013

Funnily enough I had a phase during the iPod years where most of my playlist were country music songs :marseycountry:

Nowadays I just listen to the music that is the sound of my own screams :marseyschizotwitch:

If you’ve spent time in rural sub Saharan Africa one thing that might shock you is the popularity of American country music to the point where you can’t go to a bar, party, or wedding without avoiding it 🧵

The moment American county music reached Africa in the 70s it became instantly popular in the Anglophone so much so that many African singers at the time tried to emulate 70s American country singers

One of the most popular anti-apartheid albums in west Africa in the 80s was an attempt by local singers at making their variant of American country music

“Country themed” weddings are especially popular in rural parts of Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe even adopting country line dancing

Of course the question why is American country music popular with rural Africans of all people? Well it’s mostly because it’s the only foreign music they can relate to. Compare this contemporary Zimbabwean country music and you’ll see many similar themes to American country music

Rural Africans are socially conservative farmers and ranchers so naturally music about cows and trucks speaks more to them than pop or hip hop especially if it gives them an excuse to wear their cowboy hats and boots

The popularity of American country music can even be seen in arguably the most popular music genre in anglophone sub Saharan Africa that being Christian worship music with the integration of country style melodies

And to the converse Africans have added in their own styles and instruments to covers of American country music. So if you ever find yourself in rural Africa don’t be surprised by how popular Johnny Cash and Hank Williams are !

And one more for fun from the rural west of Kenya

I love everything about this, especially the fact that chuds and pure Africans are more alike than they’re different

Go on Twitter and watch Africans hate African Americans every bit as much as any chud does.

I mean imagine you live in a heck hole working hard and you have to watch the people your ancestors traded for gun powder cry about living in a literal paradise. They're fricking bitter

You would think that the first black America woman to win an Olympics gold in wrestling would be celebrated by the media, especially since she's also the daughter of an immigrant from Africa and so patriotic and wholesome

Instead most outlets prefer to report on this :marseydepressed:

That girl is so happy and bubbly she won, it’s absolutely adorable.

It actually makes me mad they snuffed a winner of Gold to highlight someone uninteresting

When I was at uni I had a country music phase and I'd also play my music loud af for the whole building to hear (because that's what everyone living there did too). I feel a little bit embarrassed about that now.

I grew up somewhere where country music was normal and ever since I moved away (to the city, internationally) I've started to play up the role even more. No shame in it

It's some of the best pop music so far. Id rather have foids listening to generic country than mariah carey or one of the generic piano playing love song strags.

Funk-pop (not funko pop) is unironically the best one followed by art-pop, then again its pop so its pretty low tier anyway.

No one is talking about your wierd niche music you dumb frick. No woman on earth has ever listened to that. I'm talking about pop music as in the popular mass produced crap played on the most popular radio stations.

Its not good but its a good example of the genre and the fact that it can get pretty popular. Funk pop is good because funky beats are great. Synth pop is thankfully getting bigger (looking at you Chvrches)

There's some good country music from back in the day. I don't know how anyone listens to the shit they put out now though. It's comical how every song is exactly the same.

Jump in the discussion.

It's because the Nashville producers found out how popular it is with early twenties white women, so now every song is written for them.

Up through the early 2000s we had good shit. And even now we’ve got some awesome folk country revival stuff. Check out Colter Wall, he’s only 26 but darn he sounds good. The 90s were peak for pop country though.

One of the many things I dislike about the media is that they never speak about Africa except for bad news so we never hear about the good things happening there.

Obviously they have their problems and some countries or region are really fricked, but in many places people carry on with their life and they build cool things for the next generation.

I think the only western newspaper I saw that reported on the good stuff in Africa was the economist, oddly enough
