If the Jews really did own that land they would likely need to build a pizza shop on it in order to develop it and make it productive. If they built a pizza shop and then some people who weren't Jews came into the pizza shop and took the pizza - it is a simple act of theft and they should be punished for it. That is exactly what happened in this case. No different than if some people built a grocery store in the middle of some barren land in Africa and then the local Africans started coming in and stealing all the food.
