1/ Ben Collins, a senior reporter for NBC News who apparently specializes in "disinformation" and "the internet," has weighed in as follows on the calamity at the Gaza hospital—now widely understood to be the result of a misfired Palestinian rocket. pic.twitter.com/894VAYltBW

Literally everyone assumed at first that they had done it. You know, because of the massive bombing campaign. The Israelis probably took so long to respond because they couldn't believe it wasn't them and had to triple check everything.

Regular people believed it because serious papers reported it with uncritical headlines. Professional journ*lists get no such excuse. It is literally their job to be skeptical, hedge first reports from war zones with more qualifiers than beads at Mardi Gras, and continue updating as new info emerges. The failure of news organizations to act soberly around a tinderbox subject, instead of chasing clicks, was a real and serious one here.

They weren't though? The first one claims a hospital was bombed, and "estimates" several hundred killed. The second says a bunch of nonsense, then qualifies with "palestine claims". Both are strictly, literally true. They aren't even necessarily misleading to a person with a speck of critical thinking ( "palestine claimed it, it must be true").
btw this is all that separates journ*lism from misinfo - qualifying your statements - and its absolutely, 100% essential and makes all the difference in the world.
because they won't find out from innumerable other sources? for fricks sake

Does this mean that the only thing separating misinfo and fact is "in Minecraft" ?
