Idk how true it is but I have read that the IDF isn't near as competent as they are perceived to be and that they are a third rate army that gets lucky to be surrounded by Arabs who are even more incompetent.

IDF has different layers of competence and incompetence in a way. You have three competing elements of natural Israeli lackadaisicalness, an elite core and a dependence on conscripts and reservists. The lackadaisicalness disappears when push comes to shove, the elite core often does completely ninja things and the reservists overperform for the type of army they are because they're first worlders in terms of intelligence and mindset and are highly motivated by existential factors. But you do get some epic fails from time to time.
