Because Judaism in its most orthodox forms is designed to prevent cultural assimilation, i.e. dilution/change of its culture and values
Then combine the world going wrong every once in a while (inevitable) and the human hatred/distrust of what's foreign (inevitable), and you get the Jews (me). What makes it worse - ignoring the holocaust - is that Judaism doesn't try to actively grow through converting people, so the numbers of Jews won't ever reach those of Christians or Muslims
