European welfare state funded healthcare is a falling house of cards now, generally. Populations are aging, budgets are getting tighter, recruitment is a huge issue in plenty of places because pay is lower than in the private sector or abroad, and the range of potential care you can expect for 'free' is starting to be reduced wherever possible. I unironically believe we really are in the twilight of the welfare state as we know it at least.

Interestingly enough, doctor pay makes up only about 3% of the difference in cost. Goes up to about 5% including nurses/physician assistants. Most costs are pharma companies, hospital admins, insurance companies, insurance negotiators and profits for aforementioned companies. Tho my quotes on salaries are from 2017 iirc so idk if it's changed.

Imagine the fortune we could have saved if we had just paid the Saudis too depose Saddam, or the Pakis too take out Al Qaeda. The Saudis would have literally doubled their control of global oil production overnight.
