Russia - attacks Ukraine unprovoked. US supports Ukraine in war of self defense against Russia.
Hamas - attacks Israel unprovoked. Massacres civilians with genocidal intent. US supports Israel in war of self defense against Hamas.
Houthis - attacks civilian shipping. US retaliates in self defense.
None of the actions taken by the US have been inconsistent. Cope and seethe.

No. During the dissolution of the USSR there was a "handshake" agreement that nato wouldn't expand east. US says this conversation was only about Germany reunification. Russia says nuh uh it's everything.
But at the end of the day it's irrelevant. Countries have the right to self determination and that includes deciding who they want to ally with. Ukraine in 2014 had massive protests to reorient themselves more towards western Europe as opposed to Russia.
Russia lost their shit because Ukraine is "their sphere of influence" so they organized and armed separatists. When the separatists were on the verge of defeat in 2014 they invaded with their regular army. At the time they pretended they weren't Russian regulars by taking patches off, wearing non regular uniforms and masks, etc... but they've more or less admitted to it in subsequent years.

!notr-slurs help i don't know wtf this guy is saying is he lying to me
also there's one thing that doesn't sit right with me and that's when you said this:
Come on now, you can't seriously be using this as a blanket argument.
If 89wcopia and vegan_doggy_bottomburg had a deal to not ally with whateverstan, and if we kept the deal then we're cool, then I start going on dinner dates with whateverstan, I can't get mad if you shit on my bed and blame my dog.
But you did say "handshake deal" and mentioned that the deal had nothing to do with me and whateverstan, but I can't speak on that. Interesting, though.

Lmao. Yes. Yes I am. Ukraine has the right to choose whoever the frick they want to align with. Russia doesn't get to decide that for them. Align doesn't mean we're going to station 100k soldiers on Russia's borders. The original intent of the 2014 protest was more economic than military. But the Russia invasion has obviously shifted that towards more of a military thing.

I don't mean to speak to any actions that have taken place but yes, and further, nations can do whatever they want.. they are nations there are no such things as laws (unless you're counting "international laws").
If there's a deal made between two nations then that deal should be respected. Otherwise the agreements that are contingent on the deal being upheld are now also no longer subject to being upheld. Then deals between nations are pointless and pursuing peace through negotiation becomes impossible.
Nations don't have rights.. that doesn't even make sense. What rights? Rights are a privileged luxury that a nation can provide for its people.
If Ukraine had breached a deal they had signed with Russia to not do X, then they do X, whatever other agreements that were a part of that deal become null. This only matters to me because it's the difference between whether it can be said that Russia's attack was "unprovoked".
Though I'm not so unfamiliar with Russia and what they've done in the past, I am not exactly rooting for them. Sorry if my picking away at your wording comes across as biased

There was never a formal deal, and not even anything in writing. Both parties have different interpretations of the "handshake."
Ukraine was never a party to the "handshake" deal. The only thing they signed with Russia was the Budapest memorandum, which among other things Russia promised to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and not use economic coercion against them. Which brings up our next point.
Not quite. States have sovereignty. Which Russia recognized. Russia has violated that sovereignty.
