I mean the Palestinian flag is literally a slightly altered flag of the Arab Revolt and linguistically, they have a standard register in Fusha.
Realistically the different dialects aren't closer than the Romance languages, but It would be better conceptualized as if all of the romance dialects still taught classical Latin and still wrote official correspondence in Medieval Latin and had an concept of Latin identity. So an Egyptian will still know what shlonek means.
(Although I guess the Israelis would be if some people who claimed to be Ancient Etruscans came back from China, but has still preserved the language liturgically, and said that Tinia had promised Northern Italy to the Etruscan people and pushed the Italians out, claiming that there was no Italian identity prior to the 1800s and that Italians were just Indo European invaders)
Arab nationalism was a much bigger deal back in the early part of the 20th Century, ironically after the 1967 defeat of the coalition was it pushed into obscurity.
However, even if the Palestinian identity wasn't a national identity back in 1949, it sure as shit it now.
