Good question. They claim they're using Russian AAMs adapted to launch from the ground but I'm skeptical. In the Cold War we had Sea Sparrow and Chaparral (Sidewinder launched from the ground) but these were both stopgap measures because better systems had failed to work. They weren't effective at high altitude.
The US has said they used an SA-6 to shoot one down. Again this isn't a system designed for high altitude. So either they've got something else or these RQ-4s which are supposed to operate very high up don't actually work right.
