As for your comment. War is heck. Terrible tragedies are an inevitable part of war and of military occupation. Often soldiers on the ground give in to their baser instincts and while army policy can reduces this (and the IDF has not done nearly enough) it can't prevent it all together especially when soldiers aren't "hired" but taken from all walks of life.
Imagine if after Israel ended the occupation in Gaza it turned into a commie utopia, don't you think the Israelis would be a lot more optimistic about ending the occupation in the west bank?
