He was something like the 4th Alawi dictator after the Alawis started doing coups against each other. I suspect that he intentionally weakened his own people in his own sect because it was better for him personally. It's a classic thing you see everywhere at every time in history but especially in the Middle East. Bringing in jannissaries, mamlukes, etc. from some place like Russia. They're far from home and totally dependent on you so you can trust them more than your own brother. Not really a great way to fight a war tho.
