Is the expanded world cup they're doing in 2026 going to be permanent? 48 (?) countries? Then maybe Singapore could make it by 2034. Unless they're just doubling the euro strags while ignoring africa and asia.
i dont think it's possible unless they let talented athletes skip military conscription or something, 2 years of mandatory service at peak development age of 18-20ish = game over
Never thought about that. Is it the same for Israel, South Korea, Switzerland ? Etc.
Don't they make exceptions for kpop koreans to continue doing their thang and exporting korean culture or whatever. Should do the same for super athletes. Although.....I guess you'd want super athletes in the military.
I'm not sure about Israel or the Swiss but for the Koreans you can enlist at a later age like in your late twenties so your development as a player wouldn't be abruptly interrupted. Also they grant full service exemptions when the national team wins something big like the Asian cup or does well in the WC, so that's a motivating factor for sure
Our only Olympic gold winner still had to do his military service lol, I guess one can say it's equality or fairness for all but it's not gonna help us develop world-class athletes lol
What does Singapore's military do anyway? Defense against Malaysian aggression? Couldn't an invader just drop like 2 bombs on Singapore and it would be destroyed
