Is someone willing to translate this into non-g*mer speech to explain what happened and why people are sneeding?

Nvidia's offers GPU's at different price tiers (5, 6, 7, 8, and 9-series being the best). They marketed a high end 7-series card as a lower end 8-series model. People read the specs and now Nvidia is "unlaunching" their own product just before the new units release. Also keep in mind Nvidia works with partners who market these cards -- this announcement screws them over, and comes at a time where the spotlight is on Nvidia for mistreating its "partners"

More context - Nvidia leaves their AIB partners in the dark a lot. Imagine having to develop and market a product around announcements you have no prior knowledge of. One long-time partner, EVGA, said they had enough. Sad day because EVGA offered the best units and service I'm told

AIB partner? I looked it up but the definition is pretty opaque.

"Add in board." They take Nvidia GPU's and repackage them under their own brand. Imagine if Audi, Mercedes, and Toyota all used the same engine and materials, with some tweaks and custom paint to differentiate their model. It's weird
