Company I work for has a max 30 day international WFH policy. Need to get around this.

Sorry not drama. Need some advice though.

Constraints:

Allowed to use any Wi-Fi

Cannot (should not?) install VPN on work machine

I mainly stay in Airbnb’s and I don’t wanna frick with their internet settings (unless easy af to do)

Ghetto solution I used that worked was using my phone as a hotspot while phone was connected to US server via VPN app.

I’m thinking I could get a Wi-Fi repeater and just have a VPN connected to an American server on that but I would like a second opinion.

Thanks

how would I connect to it from overseas? Tunneling? I’m pretty r-slurred when it comes to networking shit like this

the newer ones use a mesh network or something: https://tailscale.com/kb/1151/what-is-tailscale/

here's a useful list too: https://github.com/anderspitman/awesome-tunneling

I think there's a problem that is the guy is overseas atm and therefore unable to setup a vpn at home.

I think he's asking how to connect to whatever he might have set up when he eventually goes overseas, if he's currently already overseas with nothing set up it's probably impossible for him to achieve his desired result of appearing to be on his home network or something... at least nothing I can think of other than getting someone at home to get a tunnel/VPN/etc up

There are residential proxies he can larp as if hes already overseas.

If his rule is no VPNs on the work device he's forced to establish the VPN on a router which takes autism and a understanding how gateways work. That takes about 3-4 hours to barely accomplish for someone who knows how to turn on a computer.

fair enough, i used to have to connect to home/office networks when I was overseas since things like online payment processors etc can get pretty sensitive otherwise so i was coming from that angle :marseybrainlet:

GRE over IPSec and forcing routing through that tunnel usually does the job

A women’s day ad just convinced me that if he has a mom or other female family member still at home, it should be no problem for her to take charge and set it all up for him.

You can set up a VPN at home and then just configure your work PC to use it.

Home config: https://www.howtogeek.com/221001/how-to-set-up-your-own-home-vpn-server/

PC config:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/connect-to-a-vpn-in-windows-3d29aeb1-f497-f6b7-7633-115722c1009c

Your home internet has to have pretty good upload speed to support this, since everything you download will be passing through that connection.

If you do video calls, start using a background image before you go, makes it less suspicious if you don't change too many things at once.

Route traffic through a VPN on the gateway side, pfSense (application-wise) or MikroTik (hardware-wise) are good options for that goal.

With a semi-decent config (DHCP is basically a must) you can do a drop-in replacement (if they're not using passworded PPPoE) of their router and put the original router back in when you're leaving.

WireGuard is an option but uh you need autism for it.

I would create a VM located in the US and only use that machine for a connection to work. VPN is risky if you turn it off. Lots of the sexy Indian dudes pretending to be in the US in my industry get caught when they forget to turn on VPN and start access sites with a sexy Indian dude IP and the owner catches it.
