It's a big day.

Glaze, our tool for protecting artists against AI art mimicry, is now available for download/use at https://t.co/8ffUCS4fUo
Glaze analyzes your art, and generates a modified version (with barely visible changes). This "cloaked" image disrupts AI mimicry process.
Who will win in the end?

let me agendapost for a minute
I fricking haaaaaaate the soyboys crying over AI.
No, you're not losing your job for AI, unless you're a fricking shitty artist and in that case good riddance.
This is personal opinion but AI art feels different than AI voices. AI voices feel like they have space to grow and can still go a long way, culminating in AI voice that is literally indistinguishable from real voices even with the use of software. AI art feels like they won't get much better than they are right now. People think it's in the beginning of a sigmoid curve; IMO it is already on the later end of said curve.
But what i've said above is just opinion. The fact is, art isn't going to disappear due to AI. Just like it didnt disappear when photography became a thing. The most likely scenario is AI being incorporated as an artist's tool, much like 3D modeling (example).
AI art, no matter how advanced it gets, will never have the soul of an artist. And no matter how much you cry and piss yourself, you'll never be able to stop technological advance.

At worst the ones that will lose their jobs are the shitty corpo artstyle artcucks because their artstyle is easy to copy and theyre probably paid in peanuts anyway.

It will probably kill a lot of people in the concept art/commisions space if it gets good enough. For small companies working on projects with small budgets, cutting out the artist and just having one of your guys generate some shitty but mostly acceptable art is just too convenient to ignore.
Honestly, I think the technological aspect is a little less important than the copyright angle. When someone inevitably takes some AI company to the Supreme Court, if they can prove somehow that AI art as a whole constitutes copyright infringement, artcels win. The "soul" of art in production is the least important factor here. How risky/impractical it is to use AI vs just hiring professional artists is where the battle will be won. Companies fear litigation way more than cutting costs. Granted, how likely a case like that is to end in favor of artcels is another matter.

…and copyright or not, it'll keep on being used by internet shitposters and those who need art for D&D.
I hope the ruling is that image generator output is uncopyrightable without significant human alteration.

Any objective measure can be optimized for. Anything a human can do to try to differentiate their art from AI art can, and inevitably will, be learned. That's true of any subject; if a quality isn't theoretically replicable, then it had zero observable effect.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Sure, but it's not objective, that's the point. Some painter accidentally creating a Pollock on the tarp they're standing on 10 years before Pollock doesn't actually a Pollock make, you can't create art by accident, intent is the entire point. Plenty of people sat silently at pianos before 1952 but John Cage was the first to think "hey, this could be art".
Anyone could have made a Rothko before Rothko, but no one did.

I'm not sure, since I didn't read the paper (didn't see a link). But I did read a paper a few years ago about injecting other images into a "true" image, which was fooling ML algorithms. StableDiffusion is using UNet. UNet is using many convolution layers and learns features on each one.
Here's a nice pic for UNet and you see the input image (64x64x8 pixels) being reduced to lower resolutions (down to 8x8x1) and on each layer they extract features.
The idea was that you hide information in the part of the image that gets dropped when you do the convolution. You basically try to fool the basic operations that the NN is performing, by tampering with the image data that a human will not see.

I didn't bother to read their explanation, but I'm guessing the distortion/filter is designed specifically for stablediffusion (current version).
it's well known that image classifiers can be fooled with tiny changes in the right direction (see e.g. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2003.10596.pdf), same thing should be possible for image generators too. Those directions depend on the model so I doubt glaze can stop image generation AI in general, at best it can stop an existing version of SD or dallE.

Ok so pretend you have an neurodivergent child that's literally never left a blank white room before in their life, who can only remember polaroids, and the words you use to describe each polaroid
You want this child to be good at drawing different things, so you give them a bunch of different polaroids
The kid can't recreate the polaroid perfectly, because it isn't a scanner and doesn't have a photographic memory, but can get the gist of what you tell them to draw
Because they have never seen literally anything other than the polaroid, they can't tell if something's wrong with it.
So if you c*m on a bunch of polaroids before you give the pics to them, the kids r-slurred and will start to draw everything all weird as if it was distorted by c*m.
Normal people can tell something's fricked up with it, and mentally subtract that to get what the image is supposed to actually look like under all the c*m, and not have that frick up their perception
The solution to this is to either explain to the child what c*m (or other contaminants) are so they know to ignore that from the polaroids they see, or to just wipe the c*m off beforehand
