Flashback: “US v. Microsoft” antitrust case developed some interesting discovery findings, which we knew at Netscape from experiencing MS's foul-play stick, including how Windows would detect “netscape.exe” as process name and disable font antialiasing, for jaggy text rendering.

If you rename your game executable they will often perform significantly worse or not work at all. There even were games that had to use names of other games so they would properly work.

:marseyneko::#marseyshooting:

Thats because opengl is so high level that tweaking the driver here and there can significantly improve fps, and fps in new games is what gpu companies compete on , so amd/ nvidia go out of their way to put game specific hacks into their huge driver blobs.

When I was in college I had a job doing tech support for students, it was like 95% removing viruses. We used Malwarebytes as a first pass that would usually get rid of pretty much everything. Some viruses would detect the running process though and immediately terminate it. You could get around it by renaming the executable lol.

this, the optimization is probably specific to how chrome renders the page. it's not that they hate other browsers, it just wouldn't work on them

Browsing the /r/Plex thread saying they're dropping old versions of Windows (Old Win10 and below) it sure seems like Windows users would prefer to never change anything ever.

So it’s the negative parts of centralization and the negative parts of decentralization?

How so?

negatives of centralization

Microsoft can be the janny of apps. So if you do no-no things MS can revoke your cert. In this sense there is still a gatekeeper.

negatives of decentralization

Discovery seems to be the trendy criticism of decentralization at the moment. Ex: searching for a specific app that is trustworthy app is far more difficult without a centralized repository.

My personal pet peeve is the lack of a centralized updates, it's common to have disparate "software updaters" instead of a single unified one.

This is all assuming users actually sign software (It doesn't seem that common, considering there's a price) and pay attention to the "this is an unknown publisher warning" in the first place.

I support things like WinGet and Chocolatey, as mentioned below, for the future of application management on Windows of course.

Microsoft doesn't control signing? The main thing windows does is tell you about the certificate.

Having a centralized repo isn't without downsides. A lot of things get out of date pretty quick but you can't update from an external source without breaking 10 other things, due to insane dependency trees.

From a non-developer perspective, every program being a standalone with no dependencies is a better UX.

Well basically theres a huge list of names that each have their specific driver hacks to squeeze out some performance. Gpu companies will create new hacks for you if you are an important software vendor! If you really wanted you could create a programm that renames your exe and benchmarks it under each name/hack and then ship with the best.
