internet archive dying

:marseymisinformation:

>… In this case, there is a “thriving ebook licensing market for libraries” in which the Publishers earn a fee whenever a library obtains one of their licensed ebooks from an aggregator like OverDrive…. This market generates at least tens of millions of dollars a year for the Publishers…. And IA supplants the Publishers’ place in this market. IA offers users complete ebook editions of the Works in Suit without IA’s having paid the Publishers a fee to license those ebooks, and it gives libraries an alternative to buying ebook licenses from the Publishers. Indeed, IA pitches the Open Libraries project to libraries in part as a way to help libraries avoid paying for licenses….

Really sounds like clear cut case for the publishers if you read the article

Why are they acting like the publishers are the only ones getting paid? Do they not realize they have to pay the writers too? The photographers? The artists? But then it wouldn't be an epic fight against capitalism.

I wonder how many of those currently defending IA were also fighting against AI art a couple weeks ago?

Banned users are permitted to appeal their bans.

When they do so, they must propose and defend a thesis that they are able and willing to participate in good faith, and that they regret the errors they made which led to the ban.

This space is valuable. Our time and efforts and skills as moderators are valuable. The mission of this subreddit is valuable.

Wasting our time / resources on purpose is bad faith engagement. Demanding labour from us which we are not volunteering to provide, is theft. Derailing and hijacking this subreddit is impermissible.

One -- just one -- of our moderator staff banned more than 300 users in the past 30 days. That alone is still less than 1% of all the moderation activity on this subreddit. We are constantly deluged by trolls and bigots seeking to stop this subreddit, harass us into silence, and sabotage the point of this subreddit.

We don't put up with it.
