Why did they make this change? It's super annoying

I think it was literally just some executive saying "This isn't how other services do usernames, fix it."

The claim it's to make it easier to find your friends on the platform, but I bet less than 10% of users have ever had an issue with that.

i wish i could find the post again, i saw a post on Tumblr with a bunch of people claiming it was because furry admiggers wanted to claim high value usernames lmao

considering how r-slurred groomercord's admins are, I choose to believe this and nothing else

They reserved a ton of names for themselves and friends so probably true

Battle.net uses discriminators and it's much better for it and the open source alternative to Groomercord is actually adding discriminators now :marseysmug3:.

I liked it because it meant spam was harder to get and it stopped people from just adding you by guessing. Anyone you wanted to talk to would've already had your full username anyways. If they didn't, then how hard is it to just send over text or something? Maybe it's for groomer mod purposes, but this shit's dumb.

They literally have a system for invite codes so just make it so you generate a friend code and send it to a friend (maybe via QR). Easy solution that's better than what they came up with and didn't require a massive overhaul.

I think their devs are just r-slurred tbh

they can't just fire all of the codemonkeys

this is a global problem with tech, you don't NEED that many devs once the product is shipped, but they miscalculated, so they just give them bogus work

They can't implement E2E encryption but they can do this shit. :marseysmirk:

There's an interview where an employee says that not having e2ee is necessary to monitor all the small communities for wrong think.

Groomercord has several hundred million users and is anything but niche, they can't keep up the illusion of being anything but ubiquitous and incredibly mainstream anymore. And when that happens, you need to develop along the lines of the lowest common denominator. The username system was novel and good, but now when the average user is the average person (and thus half of users are even dumber than that), you have to at the very least keep your core functionality accessible and immediately understood by them.

I don't like the change but I do agree with it.

Also the dev blogpost about it was really interesting.

If you are already ubiquitous you set the standard for what is normal.

The new system is no easier than the old one, normies are not going to actually remember their username either way.

what kind of r-slur doesn't remember their username

it's also visible (to you) in your profile

literally just click your name to see it

The r-slur that sets their display name as different from their forced unique username.

Just ask anyone with a common name in a large organization or on email.

Thats also how simple it was before and apparently groomers are too stupid to figure it out. :marseyraging:

the issue was relaying your case-sensitive name with spaces and fricked up characters and a hashtag and 4 digits to other people

That hasnt changed, most people dont have unique usernames across multiple platforms.

Most people are bob#### anyway because they couldn't be assed to find a unique name and the numbers they used on site 1 are taken on site 2.

I've never used groomercord. How did it work before, how does it work now? What is this big controversial change?

Previously, usernames (separate from your display name) could be anything. Weird characters, unicode, foreign shit, spaces, whatever, and it had a 4-digit number attached to the end like Rick Ro$$#9012, so up to 9999 people could have the same name on the backend, and #0000 was pretty coveted (Nitrocels can choose their number if the number is free, everyone else is randomly assigned). It was also case sensitive, so there could be a functionally limitless number of Rick Ro$$'s just by changing the caps, adding more spaces, slipping in a unicode character, and so on.

This is cool and fun, but obviously a confusing clusterfuck for the average not-terminally-online person. So now your username (again, this is only on the backend, it's used for friend-adding purposes) is unique to you. No more #XXXX or anything. They might also have done away with special characters in this field but I can't recall.

See this is the part that makes little sense when you think about the supposed solution. Having 4 numbers at the end of a fairly easy to understand name isn't harder on the average person than making them add random characters to a commonly used name like what we see with most other social media accounts these days. Especially when you consider that nowadays every site makes people remember complicated passwords that have different symbols and numbers.

Which is why Groomercord is a small niche program, hardly used by anyone.
