The interest rate hikes effected everyone essentially. Could they really even figure out accounts if your are anonymously using a third party app ?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

They're probably going to restrict the third party app accessing youtube's data, doesn't make sense to ban specific users.

Google's whole response the past year has been really odd. Revenue growth hasn't been great but they seem to making a lot of moves while before they had basically stagnated for a couple of years.

I've automated my channel subscriptions downloads with yt-dlp. Most days I don't even go on the site. It's pretty great.

I might consent to ads if they didn't play for 30-60 seconds at the start of every fricking video. YT is literally unwatchable without ad-blocker.

it has long been speculated that they don’t make any money, the gargantuan assload of bandwidth they use alone has to cost ton of money. no source i can find with a 2 minute google search seems to agree on exactly how much but it seems to be somewhere between 100mil and 500mil a year. and that is just to keep the site functional with the 1bil page views they get daily. god knows what else they pay for. it was only a matter of time before they started forcing people to pay but almost 20 years is a heck of a run :marseyshrug:

I'm such an r-slur that this would probably get me to buy premium :marseysadge:

I've had my account for darn near a decade, no way I'm risking all my playlists/favorites/subs that I've built up over years and years :marseyitsover:

Or does anyone know of any way to export stuff like playlists, or maybe copy them over to other accounts (not playlists of your own videos)? Is it possible to essentially clone an account? Doubt it but worth asking the rDrama nerds :marseyteehee:

buy premium

It's not actually a bad deal. It's the same price as a Spotify subscription and includes no ads on YouTube vids and YouTube music

Or does anyone know of any way to export stuff like playlists, or maybe copy them over to other accounts (not playlists of your own videos)?

I know google allows you export all your data

I don't remember if they include youtube stuff though.

I'm pretty sure yt-dlp can do something similar to what you want. It can retrieve lists of urls of a playlist for example.

Crap, see this is where you lose me. I could theoretically research all this stuff and get it to work, but it starts defeating the point because my goals basically are:

  • Keep all of my created playlists

  • Don't see ads

  • Spend as little money as possible

The first two are covered, but to download all that stuff I would need a shitload of space, so much that I would be spending hundreds just for storage. Personally, I'd just rather pay the 10 bucks a month instead of a massive investment that also grows over time because I'm still adding to the playlists :marseyshrug: and I can't imagine that the UX of this setup is as good or better than, you know, just using a website :marseysulk:

Let's say a video takes 1GB storage, most are less but high estimation for the sake of argument. A 1TB drive right now costs around $35, which could store at least 1,000 youtube videos if for some reason you wanted to keep them all (opposed to watch and delete). If you needed more space than that, a 2TB disk is only $60 or so etc. You can store really a lot of data these days without spending that much money.

:marseythinkorino: hmm this sounds interesting then, do you recommend any resources to get started with yt-dlp for an r-slur?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp#release-files

You can download it there, and then it's as simple as going to the command line and typing for example to download a video:

yt-dlp https://youtube.com/watch?v=zr-nJpR22og

to update the program:

yt-dlp -U

to download a whole playlist:

yt-dlp https://youtube.com/watch?v=v7ne9htY3LA&list=PLmAG6pYQA81xfJJlFlurRUB2eL79muhCH

That's mostly all you'll need if you just wanna download and watch, but there are lots of options. You can download specific file formats, or audio only or etc.

I'd just stop using youtube then. Advertising is a cancer on society and doesn't really fit into any political model e.g. if we're in a capitalist meritocracy you shouldn't be manipulating people to buy the inferior product.
