How useful is IP to non government agencies anyway? It never gives a very precise location apart from country and sometimes vague area .

My current IP says I am on the other side of the country

You could conceivably use it to dox people if you already have enough information about them (e.g. their full name). Otherwise it's not good for much afaik

It's a problem if google/facebook/data brokers get your IP, since a) they have so much tracking shit all over the web they can probably link it to your profile, b) they're using machine learning to analyse and sell your info in a way that might affect you irl.

But fediverse randos seeing your IP in their server logs? Meaningless.

yeah that's the thing is that every web server :marseymaltliquor: in the world :marseyww1russian1: (including yes, this one) is logging IP some way or another. I know reddit :marseynoyoupedozoom: for example would :marseywould: attach the creation :marseywatermark: IP to every post and comment :marseysoypointtrips: (so would :marseywould: ruqqus). the issue here though i guess :marseyshrug: is that you could link users to another.

for example, we log failed logins from admin :marseyantianticarp: accounts (including the IP address it came from) to a file, because if we ever need to, we can deploy countermeasures against specific attackers (IP banning, etc). we also log IPs for ratelimiting purposes (mostly so you guys can't spam 50 bazillion posts a minute). we also log the IP of every single :marseykiwimom: request too so I guess :marseyshrug: there's that :marseyxd:

our IP logs do not get deleted on a regular :marseyregular: basis unless :marseyunless: you're doing it manually, which I strongly doubt.

They're not useful unless you're hosting something on that IP at home that has public personal info. They can get is your ISP and general location which may be terribly inaccurate. Home IPs change occasionally so trying to collect IPs from other sites or potential alts can be worthless.
