Free coding learning resource

Figured I'd share this in case anyone is interested in learning coding or learning a new language.

Someone I know teaches software dev in college and they told me they use these resources/vouched for them.

I skimmed through the JS book and it looks useful. All you do is enter your email and you can download them.

The site has tutorials for different use cases as well.

Here's the list of books/languages:

πŸ“š β†’ C Handbook

πŸ“š β†’ Command Line Handbook

πŸ“š β†’ CSS Handbook

πŸ“š β†’ Express Handbook

Fun, learn to code so you can spend your days behind a desk

Frick that shit

The absolute best time I had in my life was when I quit IT to go and work in the electrical sector. Just spending so much less time behind a desk and so much more time travelling, even if it was just to substations and power plants did _so much_ to alleviate my depression.

IT is a miserable job. Unless you can do it from a yacht or while travelling, and you probably can't, because it's simply hard to write good code on a laptop.

It's for bugmen and pod people

I feel you and you are right! lol I also think a lot of people are going into programming with the idea that they will make $100k out of college. If you don't like doing it, you aren't going to like it. I love programming but absolutely hated the politics of corporate life and the shit meetings and every other corporate part of programming (Agile is shit idc what people say). I'm glad I got out of corporate life too.

I want to die. Expectations that ill be on call 24/7 bc i am a "leader". Oh its healthcare btw so double those expectations because patient care will be impacted.

I make absurdly good money and my family wants for nothing but I have no exit plan and hate this golem i have built.

Don't fret, friend. I was stuck too and it took me time to figure out what I could do to get away. Give yourself some time to figure things out and be patient with yourself and you'll find something.

The other thing about programming is... unless you're on the cutting edge and in some research department, you're just implementing (most likely re-re-re-re-implementing) some tedious piece of business logic for a company you don't really give a shit about that's decided they need this feature or that feature and discovering 5 years down the line that they decided to 'pivot' and that entire feature you spent ages developing was only used by 100 customers.

In the corporate world... Sales is bearable because you don't really have to care what you're selling, if you're in a reasonably big company you have some assurance that it isn't garbage and you're selling to other businesses so you can actually sleep at night. You can bring it down to a chess game between you - the salesman - and the other company's buyer. You fight your little war battle by battle and you know when you've achieved something because the sale goes through. The job inherently provides personal milestones, you get your satisfaction, you celebrate and you move on to the next battle. It's fun. Pluss lots of opportunities to travel and meet people.

Electricity, at least the sector I worked in, was fun/satisfying for the same reason. No matter how complicated a power station gets, it's still a black box from which electricity emerges. If you make it work in some practical sense you know that you're doing something that's meaningful. You don't have to convince yourself that what you're doing matters. It's self-evident.

I feel you. I think most people realize this in their 30s after a few years in the field. It's exciting at first but you realize that you do the same thing over and over. Every company hypes themselves up and you have to pretend you care. I liked a lot of my coworkers (contrary to what I see people say here about their team) and wasn't even someone who hated my team or felt I was better than anyone. I still chat with a lot of old coworkers today. I just hated corporations, useless suits, and the constant thumb they have on developers.

When I first started, it wasn't like that. It was the wild wild west and fun. It's now an extremely boring and mind numbing career but you can't tell zoomers these things because they need to experience it themselves. The 30 year old programmer burnout is real.

Cheers to us for finding a happier way to make money!

When I first started, it wasn't like that. It was the wild wild west and fun.

If you look at games that were written in the C64/Spectrum era, often the whole game would be done by one guy.

I think those types of programmers are very different from the 'programmers' we have today, Those guys wouldn't last 5 seconds in a modern dev team because they're just not cogs. They might lead a team - or more probably a company - but I can't see them being at all onboard with this heavily compartmentalised development model that exists today.

Every company hypes themselves up and you have to pretend you care.

There's a personality type, for sure. I think 'bugman' about covers it lol

Neighbor this isn't a debate about whether or not you should learn to code.

It's resources for people who are already interested in learning to code or who already code and want to learn another language.

I learned Matlab in college and my industry either uses that or Python for data, hence why I’m trying to learn it.

Matlab’s documentation still is the best I’ve ever seen.

Don't feel bad. My ex-bf was a really smart guy and graduated with a Comp Eng degree. He just could not pick up on C to save his life, and I had to help him. Circuit design and things like that came easy for him, but not programming. Everybody excels in certain things and other things are hard. Better be good at one specific thing than mediocre at all things.

Oh yea I don't feel bad about it at all, I've got plenty of knowledge in areas that are much more relevant for my job. I'm just trying to learn it to help build tools for my job and it does not want to click with me.

I’ve never been a codecel but the closest points I got to proper coding was always just googling β€œdo X in Y” and then hacking something together.

I’m not sure if it’s shape rotator or wordcel but syntax makes my brain hurt so I had the best luck with Scheme.

Best way to learn. I learned before their was a Stack Overflow, so at least now you can find a solution without banging your head against a desk. lol

Tutorials are good for learning what language is best for what IMO.
