Solus or MX Linux

I'm switching my Linux install away from PopOS because GNOME is shit. With the release of Solus 4.4 and MX Linux 23 I've narrowed it down to those two, which should I pick?

I used Arch for awhile. However I just don't like the package management system. I'd rather use Nix over the AUR tbh. I do have to say Arch is amazing, and people who like the terminal are probably best served with Arch or NixOS.

OpenSUSE for just werks, rolling release with rollbacks + it's developed by a company that knows what they're doing. Only downside I've found is the package manager is slow af and doesn't work optimally sometimes.

I tried it and had nothing but issues with my hardware. BTRFS has given me nothing but issues every time I've used it.

I had tons of weird issues with Tumbleweed compared to Arch which was actually more stable. However OBS is really cool and a pretty genius system. I think I'd probably go with SUSE for any professional needs, especially now that Red Hat has shit the bed.

issues with hardware

Yeah I forgot to mention that... For some reason the devs think it's more "secure" that the firewall blocks stuff like printers by default so you disable it to actually connect the printer to your computer.

This actually enraged Linus so much that he called OpenSUSE devs "mentally diseased" and should "kill themselves now" for thinking that root passwords should be necessary to install printers or change settings.

Oh no I mean like my mesa driver wasn't working right. I was having visual artifacting and my PC would freeze. I've literally never had these issues on another distro. Of course this was years ago, but it still turned me off of using it. Looking at it now, it seems OpenSUSE is working on something called ALP which will probably improve the situation massively. Might try OpenSUSE again when that makes its way into a desktop version.

Oh I see, haven't had a problem with mesa drivers myself.

As for ALP I think the amount of people working on that isn't very high but I guess we'll see. It's replacing Leap so that kinda sucks, but TW is what I use anyways so I guess it's not that big of a deal.

Depends if you still want a debian based OS.

I'm not for or against it. I'd probably be using Nix for any work software packages anyway.

MX with xfce is really nice

Yeah that's what I'm leaning towards. Weirdly enough the KDE version now has an older kernel than XFCE ahs despite them having parity last release. I'm sure I could easily update the kernel with the KDE version but I've never given XFCE a solid chance, so I might as well do so now.

I'd avoid Solus for a few years to confirm they know what they're doing (for real this time).
