I would be very tempted to pilfer every single Pi from these scooters ngl

If it was like 6 screws i would have tons of pis

I've kind of come around to Pis being a huge meme. The lack of any good I/O option makes them get BTFO by an ancient x86 device every time.

Especially when MSRP for an 8G model is $80+. You can probably frick around on Craigslist and get an x86 laptop that's more functional for cheaper.

Pis were a good idea at $35 when no other alternatives really existed.

Yup, the first of its kind was cool. People just push the meme too much imo.

Buying a pi as a computer is r-slur tier unless you are third world. Pi's are all about using the hardware to make things. Good for running pihole/ad guard too on and not have to pay for a whole butt x86 computer running 24/7

Yes I agree but I've argued with many people saying the opposite. If you're just using it as a server it's pretty silly.

Even to your x86 power point, any cpu in the last 10 years is going to use similar power to the pi when sleeping.

Yeah the low power draw realistically only matters in battery-powered environments. If you leave it plugged :marcusrcaconnecting::marseyrcaconnecting: into the wall then it really doesn't matter. Like oh cool it draws 5W and not 15W as if 10W fricking matters to your home's electric bill.

I got into it with someone once who was recommending a newbie get a “low power” version of a cpu and I'm like bro, his fridge will use up the different in yearly wattage in about a day.

Yeah but that x86 doesn't have GPIO pins and Pis have a community that is pretty nice.

There are a lot of competitors now that are much more compelling than a vanilla pi

Jump in the discussion.

The GPIO is definitely a benefit but in the space I'm in people legitimately hock them as usable Linux computers / servers.

Yeah I agree Vanilla pi is loosing its niche but ARM boot loader wonkyness is keeping it at the top.

I hated people who denigrate Arduinos over "why would you use such a limited 8-bit system?"

Because it's cheap, doesn't draw peepee for power, is easier to learn, and fits most people's needs

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The Arduinos are great for prototyping but you don't see people shoving them wholesale into devices like Pis. They are pretty clearly for prototyping.

yeah because they're devboards r-slur you use the actual chip on it when you're done prototyping or find an equivalent once your proof of concept's done

:marseycon#fused:

Yeah that's what I said. The Arduinos get used for prototyping, people then make proper boards.

With Rpis they just shove the thing in wholesale and don't bother to prototype.

They are extremely useful for commercial use. The reason this scooter company used a pi is because they're common and familiar with a proven support ecosystem.

Could these products use something better suited than a pi? Probably, but the cost difference is so minor that retraining the engineering team to work with an unfamiliar solution will be more expensive.

I was speaking more generally.

Though a pi 4 is probably overkill for this use case.

They're worth a lot more than $80 for the past few years. I had to buy a Pi400 just in order to get one under $150

Jump in the discussion.

Aren't they more like $40? Assuming they're using one of the lower-power models.

Jump in the discussion.

Currently, they're more expensive due to scalpers and the chip shortage. In normal times (pre-2022), they would be more around $40.

Of course, $40 before you buy the power cable and the microSD card.

I have no idea what's the purpose of these pi things is? Do they have a good performance for their cost and size?

There is a very large community surrounding the Pi ecosystem. Even a brain dead moron can figure out to how to do anything on a Pi.

For non codecels, having the same hardware as everyone else and being confident the code will work is really a plus. If someone else did it, you can too if you can copy and paste and follow simple instructions

The pi 4 is actually decently powerful. Their purpose is easy prototyping and easily accessible gpio pins. You have all the benefits of Linux to add to your robot or creation.

There are pi competitors that offer better performance.

Imagine knowing this in 2021, you could give the Seattle homeless $5 per stolen scooter and then shuck the Pis out in a garage to flip on Amazon/Ebay for $75+. Maybe even shuck the copper windings out of the motors too for spare cash.

I have nothing left to live for but revenge. Women must be punished for their crimes of rejecting such a magnificent gentleman as myself. All of those popular boys must be punished for enjoying heavenly lives and having s*x with all the girls while I have to suffer in lonely virginity.

I remember when they rental bike things first popped up people were mass chop chopping them (Either buying them from police as "Abandon property" or just throwing them in the back of their truck) does that still happen?

not as much but yeah. they get pretty pissy about it though

tbh I have no idea why people aren't doing it on mass. Just pry it open, rip out the leads connecting the battery to the controller (thus killing it's gps) and boom free scooter.
