They're IP ranges that are never used on the public internet so that you have some IPs you can use locally without any collisions.

Iirc there are three: 10.*.*.*, 192.168.*.*, and a middle one that starts 172. but I forgot the second octet range.

You'd use a subnet mask for literally any ip network. It's how you specify a range. Public networks do the same.

Well it's a longtime ago. I just remember it from routing tables when doing subnetworks. It does make sense to divide from the topvto the bottom. More ip4 for all

It's been over a decade since I took any cisco classes but aren't there ip ranges reserved for some purposes?
