YouTube is removing the ability for creators to choose where ads show up or whether viewers can skip them :marseycapitalistmanlet:

YouTube is borderline unwatchable on smart TVs with two 15 second unstoppable ads every 5 minutes. Piholes are gonna be pretty much mandatory for watching anywhere other than a browser

I unironically refuse to buy smart TVs because of this. If I can't mod the software I can't skip ads, if I can't skip ads the fricking thing better come at a hefty discount

There are android smart TVs on the market, I guess you can root at least some of them.

I've used to think like you, but it's actually not that bad (compared to the alternatives) and pretty tinker-friendly. I better in every aspect than iOS or whatever proprietary crapware most smart TVs will throw at you. It has power management down better than linux afaik. With termux, you have a shell that can compile arbitrary software portable enough to run on arm, including most D programs, dlangui only the old 32 bit ARM chips thoughbeit.

Prooting into a real linux distro for ARM is also possible. If the phone supports HDMI over usb-c, you can have a portable desktop that is quite ok if you are accustomed to old hardware. Flagship samsung devices from 2020 have more RAM than my main laptop.

If you don't use the open source android AOSP instead of the bloated vendor ROMs, the battery manager will respect you when you request not getting your apps killed

The OS kinda sucks due to the security model. I think if you root your device, you can just use the linux system directly, but I haven't tried that yet. Especially file access is around 10x slower due to some android autism. Keep in mind that some apps like banks will lock you out if they detect root (:marseytrollgun: :bluehelmet: :bluehelmet: :bluehelmet: ), so better don't depend on these.

Having one GUI framework for the whole OS is actually a plus to me, even if you have to use kotlin for it. Since D has good templates, I want to try asrd:jni to try to port my personal programs to be used/ activated via an app.

I did not know that people used TVs like computers. I thought that everyone ignored those shitty in tv apps and just hooked them up to a computer as a monitor like I do. It makes the most sense, seems to be no benefit the other way

On Roku TVs, do piholes work for peapeepee, hulu, and other streaming services with ads? Ublock works fine on my computer, but it would be nice to just click on the app on the TV instead of plugging in the HDMI to my computer.

Edit: lol at how the filter messed with the NBC streaming service name I mentioned.

Can't speak for peapeepee (lol), but Hulu used to make you wait out the ad time with a blank screen and the timer counting down until your show comes back on. It was far better than the obnoxious ads coming on that were far louder than the shows

A trick I've learned is to click the info button and click "Do not show me this ad again" and it'll skip all ads. I do that whenever an ad is unskippable. Every couple weeks it'll stop you from doing that as it turns off ad personalization, so next time an ad plays just click the info button and click "Turn on ad personalization" and you can start skipping them again.

If you can find a download app on your tvs app store you can install smart tube plus through an APK or whatever it's called.
