one of my favorite things about hacker news commenters is how they start out a little weird but not really that far out there, and then slowly reveal more information and you get a full view into their demented life
I live in my car. It's awesome.
Oddly enough, I live in an even older Ford Fusion and it's really easy. Spend time at the Library, Starbucks and get a gym membership for showering. I work full-time and don't peepee around with washing dishes or anything. Got an inverter and think of my car as a generator with wheels.
I took out my front passenger seat so I can lay down to sleep. Made it through the summer in the south and it was pretty bad, but you sleep while your body sweats and you deal with mosquitos and flies on the regular.
and then later
No, I eat Budding Ham and Walmart cheese sandwiches + goldfish crackers and Aldi energy drinks as my 75% source + strawberries and bananas. My diet is mostly sandwiches and Taurine...

It's such a nice thought
I have no idea how they afford gas and food and repairs unless they're living off a trust fund, but it's a very cozy idle dream if you don't think too hard on it

Whatcha got against car hobos?

Vandwellers are freespirit ascetics who are always going new places and doing things and have this whole big hippie quasi-community of traveling folk, their lives are centered around going places and seeing things.
Car hobos do it because they're r-slurred failures who have literally not amounted to even the most bare minimum required to achieve absolute rock bottom and so they live in coffins being sad and miserable and hiding from people who want to break into their shitty little 2008 Priuses that only start 25% of the time and they never bathe and they eat spray cheese and wait far too patiently for death.

I was trying to find out why they're using a Prius, but it seems to be... AC? That's it?
As for vandwellers, I think you're putting too much credit into them. It was kind of a guilty pleasure for me too, because it involves so much tinkering, but fricking heck, seeing the setups of most people, it's downright r-slurred. Shoddily crafted beds, not fixed to the floor, made out of fricking pine of all things (aka the cheapest, but weakest, thus heaviest wood), another free-roaming 20kg battery, and if you're really fancy... a magnetic fricking knife holder? Lets put all these behind the front seats, in a metal coffin often traveling on highway speeds, where any of the aforementioned things will instantly turn into a fast moving and deadly projectile in case of a collision.
I mean, I support redditors taking themselves out of the gene pool as much as the next person, but fricking heck.

I can't understand why van dwellers keep re-inventing the wheel rather than learning from the boat building community. I saw one guy do a foam build and I was thinking, "Congratulations, you've just discovered fiberglass bulkheads."

Can you expand on that? From my limited knowledge, I'm guessing the guy constructed things out of some lightweight synthetic foam, instead of using wood, which is similar to what is used in the boating industry nowadays?

One common way to build walls (bulkheads) on a boat is to use foam sandwiched between fiberglass. This creates a very strong and waterproof wall, and the benefits of using foam are that it's insulating, doesn't rot if it does get wet, and it's easy to cut, which is important when you have curved hulls (or oddly shaped car interiors). The light weight isn't as important for boats, but as you noted, great for vans.

Youre stereotyping pretty hard here. Some of us vandwellers are also r-slurred failures who have literally not amounted to even the most bare minimum required to achieve rock bottom
