It's written in such a way that it mostly is just trying to say turn the car off if they're asleep or drunk at least. That's easy if someone is conked out until you remember that middle America exists and that there are actually places people drive in a straight line for 300 miles on i80. There's nothing about it needing to be remotely activatable, but cars REALLY don't need a NEW point of failure.

Maybe he also shouldn't have done this vote seconds after he tried to add in an amendment against using any gov funds for infrastructure to investigate competition analysis in company mergers after the DoT got involved in the jet blue-spirit merger instead of just the DoJ and he views that as a waste of resources and thinks buttigieg is annoying and wasteful (he is). This clip is very funny:

Whew guys the fact checkers have debunked this :marseybeanrelieved:https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2023/01/19/fact-check-false-claim-bill-mandates-kill-switch-cars-police-drunk-driving/11066287002

Automobile experts told USA TODAY the bill does not direct a kill switch to be implemented in cars, nor does it give any third parties, including law enforcement or government officials, access to the in-vehicle technology. Rather, the bill in question directs a federal agency to require technology that would detect driver impairment and disable the vehicle in that scenario.

[...]

One provision in the bill seeks to prevent alcohol-related driving fatalities by making “drunk and impaired driving prevention technology” standard equipment in all new vehicles.

:marseysmug2: :debunked:

If anything this will cause more crashes when peoples cars randomly switch off on the roads.

a "kill switch" implies the driver is killed

if the driver isn't killed it isn't a kill switch

It can only be used to kill vehicles in good faith and cannot be abused because it's to target impaired drivers only, obviously!

Surely impaired driving detection devices won't also detect reckless driving as impaired driving, besides its not like you have a right to break the speed limit and change lanes aggressively.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

i think the idea is that the required anti-boozecruise kill switch is local while a true kill switch would be accessible over the network. But given the excessively network-connected nature of modern cars that would be almost be a distinction without a difference

its not a remote kill switch but its a kill switch.

I feel the same way about shit like lane change assist and automated breaking. They've 100% killed people before. I think it was audi who had an issue where past a certin speed lane change assist locked your steering to the point where throwing the wheel in either direction did nothing

It's such a weird technicality to argue with. I think what they're saying is that the mandate allows car manufacturers to implement the new safeties in such a way that they're fully autonomous, without any external input. It might even effectively require them to be implemented in this way if they're required to work even in adverse weather where a satellite connection might not be operational.

But it's still pretty bullshit.

It's this weird thing coming from the left where rather than arguing for better enforcement of the law or stronger sentencing, because those are "problematic", they instead try to add restrictions that prevent you from breaking the law in the first place. In other words, they don't want to give you the freedom to break the law, because dealing with enforcement is too "icky" so they don't want to do it.

Kinda like how in my very blue city, black people caught illegally possessing firearms are still given extremely lenient sentences. You'd expect that would be something the democrats would want to enforce given all the grandstanding about gun violence but they don't want to punish a black person, even if they're clearly in violation of the law. So instead they want to make it impossible to illegally own a gun by simply banning guns entirely... which obviously isn't going to work.
