I love that redditors pay so much for ubiquiti garbage so they can act like they are are some 1337 haxor without having to learn anything about networking

I bought Unifi products because I wanted 800Mbps over WiFi. There's other products to accomplish this but when I started this project pre-covid TPLink wasn't competing in this space yet.

learn anything about networking

Does anyone. Understanding LANs is orthogonal to understanding radios.

but do you go around telling people you can make subnets bc you went with a prosoomer company? I love the networking subs. It's all people circle jerking over ubuiquiti and small business owners trying to get support and getting no help alot of times since no one know

Does anyone?

I think what's weird is people who ever use the IDS, I don't get the in depth packet scanning meme

what are your opinions on IPv6

I am bugging my local provider to gimma an ipv6 address natively. I honestly haven't used it a ton but I'd like to switch a portion of my local networks over to it next year and learn more. my network is pretty tiny so a few ipv4 subnets have just worked forever but i like that it was built with encryption in mind and that's my main motivation for switching

SLAAC is magnificent, I think that's my favorite part - beyond the obvious Total NAT Death.

I really should go through the HE.net IPv6 certification, I think they send you a cool shirt lol.

Redditors do this in every tech sub because they have no idea how anything works.

Here i was buying edge products because they were cheap and worked well enough, but because redditors want to pretend they have enterprise gear the product line gets abandoned for cloudslop configured via button clicks.

Troy Hunt convinced me to buy two unifi AP's and now I regret listening to that stunningly handsome michael fassbender lookin' butt neighbor

Actually I installed OpenWRT on both of them so this scandal doesn't effect me. But still, I feel like I could have gotten the same or better hardware for a lot less money.

Yeah people chose unifi as it was basically the only option in the space at the time. Similar products to it tended to be marketed to businesses and therefore $$$$$$$.

Yes and it's no surprise it was founded by a lot of ex-Apple people. They understand the power of a good ecosystem.

what is a good wifi 6 AP that is not ubiquiti?

I mean I'm still using Unifi but I've heard very good things about TPLink Omada. Seems to be the new darling in some circles.

But unless you're jumping from WiFi 4 (n) and not WiFi 5 (ac) you're probably thinking of WiFi 6 E - that's where the fun 6GHz comes in that gets you 1Gb+ speeds. This of course means you'll need 2.5GbE gear minimum (which is newer than 10GbE, long story - a lot of tech has 10 but not 2.5)...

All that is to say regular WiFi 6 is great for dense deployments at businesses and such but at home you can probably squeeze out a 800Mbps, low latency out of a high end AC AP with enough tuning (80-160MHz, High channel power, 5Ghz, 4x4 MIMO, etc.)

I think if you have good AC APs now you haven't turned just right (or God forbid are only meshed not hardwired) you can just get that fixed and wait to upgrade to WiFi 7 which is already ending up in devices.

TPLink Omada

Took a cursory look at it, seems like I can run a central controller locally similar to Unifi controller. Looks promising but TPLink don't have a good track record when it comes to the quality of their software.

AFAIK wifi 6 brings improvements to the 2.4/5 GHz bands as well, e.g. OFDMA? I don't know if my home LAN cables can handle 2.5 or even 10gbps, so I don't think 6GHz would be useful to me when I have no issues with using the 2.4/5 Ghz bands.

:marseysweating: I am using hardwired APs. All in all I have no issues with using Ubiquiti APs and have no need to upgrade

Yeah it seems like TPLink are giving a shit now and competing. I will say I haven't used them personally but it is the one I hear spoken most about.

There is also Cisco Meraki but it has licensing costs I believe.

At least in my research, you can probably pull the extra 200Mbps with a well configured WiFi 6 AP and well behaved client but I'm not sure the upgrade is worth it if you're already pulling a good WiFi 6 signal. That's kind of my point though, if you're not looking for higher than 1Gig speeds the upgrade is kind of bleh.

I don't know if my home LAN cables can handle 2.5 or even 10gbps

Funny enough the LAN cables matter but you can still pull off 10Gb over CAT5e for like 50 meters. That could be substantially longer than your actual run, not even mentioning 2.5Gb which obviously runs easier.

The bigger problem is switches and routers for 2.5Gb can be $$ still.

Unifi is family of networking products made by the company Ubiquiti.

They are well known for having very well priced networking gear targeting home office/prosumer/small businesses. Pretty popular in the nerd hobbyist space.
