I was forced to use one for the first time a week ago and it was like all of the negatives of a chromecast with none of the positives.

I dunno if I film myself doing it realistically. Local cops park 2-5 patrol cars out front of it at night, and theres not enough hobos nearby to pay to do it because again the local cops cluster in front of it at night.

They made dumb tv's into smart tv's. Might have been the drive to make smart tv's the standard.

For this, I hate them too.

Same. Would've loved to save 50 bucks to buy a tv with less likeliness to break down and that my game consoles will turn into a smart tv anyways.

Try buying a "dumb" tv, they're so overpriced and sold almost exclusively to hotels these days

A dumb TV will generally cost more. The "smart" features cost less than the company gains from ads/data/commissions surrounding the smart features.

Yep, a smart TV is essentially subsidized by all that bullshit and prints money every day.

The dumb one makes them no money after initial sale, so they have price it higher to compensate.

Still, I'll take the take dumb one.

I don't have one of those either. Just a chromecast for streamslop and a 25' hdmi cable I can plug into my laptop for everything else. My TV is older than some users of this site but it's large, 720p, and somehow has HDCP support so I'm keeping it until it dies.

Roku is shit. Amazon firesticks are great and you can install Kodi and Plex on them.

Pretty certain Roku has a Plex app. I don't have one but I have multiple friends who do.

I have an NVidia Shield which just runs Android TV. I would have used the smart TV features but the integrated processor is so weak it can't properly decode high-bitrate 4k video (on a high-end 4k TV) so I needed to buy this other thing which has a far more capable processor in it.

I just built a small PC for my TV for streaming and other shit, it works great.

I tried that before, it's just not nearly as seamless as something designed explicitly to run a TV. It even had one of those weird remotes with a physical keyboard (small) and a tiny little trackpad to control the mouse. But again it sucks compared to something designed to be used from a dedicated remote.

Browsing the android TV version of Plex on my TV is a better experience than browsing the PC version of Plex on my TV.

Realistically I don't care about the ads and shit bc I never look at them. I remapped the "Netflix" button on my remote to open up Plex, and if I ever turn my TV on and it's not already on Plex, I press that one button and it launches. Maybe I see an ad for a split second but I really don't care that much.

I run Kodi on the PC and control everything with an xbox x controller. If not using Kodi I have this little app from steam called "controller companion" running in the background and you can control all of win 10 using the same xbox controller. It's mint.
