Journos really have a hate boner for Musk to the point of being deranged. The actual message there was "Twitter video is being fixed so it's as reliable as text/pics".

Exactly, they want to meet the tiktok market and the shitty player was holding them back

I really don't think they're talking about fixing their shit, the app currently has infinite scrooooling and easier fullscreen, I think it's more likely algorithmic preferencing of videos and heavier ad load for people watching them.

That's impossible. It's taken reddit over a decade to still have a dogshit video player. There's no reliable way to play videos over the internet, this has been proven.

The images also suck. It's legit better user experience for everyone, both the uploader and the viewers, to upload to a 3rd party site then link it :marseyemojirofl: And that's with Imgur getting a lot worse over the years too.

I honestly don't understand them. They make fun of him for overpaying for twitter. Now they make fun of him for twitter losing worth?

That doesn't make sense. Either he overpaid (so it's worth less) or he is running it into the ground (it lost worth). But both?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Its the same thing: the paper value is going down because he overpayed for it, and only now is that becoming clear in the valuation. Its funny at the time of sale, but also funny later when the paper value converges on the actual value. Besides that, many of his own decisions caused it to drop in value as well, so its funny that he overpaid for it and ran it into the ground.

It is both: he overpaid at the time of sale (he claimed he wasn't doing it for economic reasons) and since then he's scared away advertisers so it's worth even less now.

It all feels very five years ago. As we've documented, starting around 2016, Facebook executives including Mark Zuckerberg began pushing the notion that news video on Facebook was publishers' bright future, a “new golden age.”

It turns out that the metrics that Facebook was using to measure engagement with news video were wrong, massively overestimating the amount of time that users spent consuming video ads. In 2019, Facebook settled a lawsuit with those advertisers, paying them $40 million (while admitting no wrongdoing). But it was too late for the publishers who'd already pivoted to Facebook video and then either made big cuts or shut down completely when it turned out people weren't actually watching.

FB always did shady ad metrics, but there's no doubt video is basically Metas main business these days on instagram/threads/fb

I'd say they could capitalise on porno but last time Twitter tried that they discovered a massive CP problem[1], which I don't think they've fixed, and Reddit already has this market cornered[2]. Maybe there's a space for X to lean in to “discussing” (chuds getting mad at) content ripped from TikTok[3], since TikTok is more rabbithole than coherent ‘discourse', but this is also just advertising for porn[4], except Musk doesn't get a cut.

[4] “X users have become so right-wing and reactionary that they're spending their time raging over literal ads for porn. The second takeaway is how savvy new porn operations have become. They've built these labyrinthian networks of SFW viral content on major platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube that guide users to their OnlyFans pages. And the final takeaway for me is that at our current late stage of Web 2.0 everyone is having such a Bad Time Online at such a consistent level that you can build an entire media company off of short videos of young women saying random stuff that makes weird men angry. Inspiring, really.” https://www.garbageday.email/p/heres-where-the-fake-podcast-clips

They could be if they actually fixed their UX to make videos more discoverable. Tweets are ephemeral by design how tf does Musk not realize this?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Tiktok/instagram is ephemeral too and its all video these days

Twitter's search isnt great though. They'd need to build in a proper video UI into search. Youtube's is annoying now with shorts when they mix content so hopefully it's not like that
