I'm relatively computer literate. I've built my own PC, know how to do trouble shooting, manage windows etc.

I wouldn't know where or how to begin with installing Linux on my desktop. And as shitty and awful as Windows has become, if a linux PC isn't of at least comparable user-friendliness to a Windows PC, I don't think I'd have the time or the patience to use it.

Get a USB drive, install Rufus, download Linux Mint iso, use Rufus to put iso onto USB drive, boot from USB using BIOS, install Linux onto drive of your choice, done.

Linux these days is decently user friendly, or rather, less user unfriendly than modern Windows. I usually put Solus (if willing to use a less popular distro) or Mint on people's machines. So far not many issues have popped up, certainly less than Windows. It is a learning curve though, so you need to have patience for that. Have to unlearn a lot of the ways Windows does things.

dont use mint or solus

make this r-slur do a arch install

Hmm. Thanks, I appreciate your insight. I guess Linux really isn't for me.

There are lots of open source programs that are at least on par with proprietary products. I use GIMP, LibreOffice, Inkscape no worries. I can understand why an OS would be harder to match tho.

Honestly if someone's a windows poweruser I'd just tell them to run opensuse since that comes with the YAST, which is vaguely comparable to the control panel in Windows, which is a big help since I think one of the problems people run into when they cross over to linux's how everyone recommends you use terminal commands to configure your system instead of something visual with decent defaults.

I'd like to, but I've had nothing but problems both times I tried it out. That's why I suggest Mint to most people, it allows you to do almost everything casuals need to do with GUIs.

Either plug in new drive or make like a 250gb partition on your current drive (if you can't do this you're already filtered. Could also do 100gb if necessary)

Download loonix file

Use Rufus on a 8gb USB drive

Turn pc off

Plug in USB

Turn pc on

Spam f12 f11 f10 and del (or just see what button takes you to boot order/bios when the mobo logo pops up)

Set usb to boot first

Install loonix

Unplug USB

????

Profit!!

ALTERNATIVELY

You can use Rufus with a loonix distro like puppy Linux

DO not Make a partition or put in new drive you can run puppy Linux from USB. It's so small it runs off ram. Good way to get the experience

If you use Mint like suggested below you'll have a more consistent UX than modern Windows.

Ubuntu gets hate a lot too but its quite good.

Because moving forward means typing a bunch of nonsense into a prompt instead of simply clicking on something.

And this is fine, so long as lonely nerds can keep themselves perched upon a tall horse that doesn't exist.
