I do. If something as simple as what a PR is evades you you're not capable of anything even slightly complex. These people are fricking r-slurs who should be out picking berries or working at Tim Hortons fricking my coffee up too.

Check this out: https://old.reddit.com/r/developersIndia/comments/1b8moof/i_am_tired_of_the_overworking_collegue_in_my_team/?sort=controversial

OP is bitching about his coworker daring to actually work hard and get stuff done, and whines since it exposes the rest of the team's laziness. And the overall sentiment in the thread is that OP is right and the "overworkers" should be pressured to be lazier. They actually hate competence it's unreal.

yes, overworkers are scum, they need to :marseykys2:

Their definition of "overwork" is doing the bare minimum anyways. At least the job market is shrinking so some of the tardlets will have to go back to shoveling cow shit on their parent's farm.

It's the weirdest thing I've noticed as a novice, since I've been getting into coding as a side hobby and trying to learn the ropes. Because I'm going self-taught and a good portion of that is watching YouTube for tutorials, I'll either get something like a lecture from a college that was recorded and posted online or I'll get an Indian guy talking in very stilted English who filmed the tutorial on Bandicam and made code that even I can see is absolute dogwater. It's the weirdest disparity. I knew Indians were disproportionately in tech, but I at least assumed they'd be good at it.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Whatre you learning?

Also in my personal (based) opinion, reading documentation and articles is waaaayyy more helpful than any programming video

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

At the moment I'm sticking to the baby shit. I'm trying to get more up to speed with JavaScript and Python more than anything, since it's good to start with and because LLMs are going to hit my industry like a truck in the next few year and I'd want to get ahead of the curve as far as integration and proficiency beyond just prompt engineering. Dabbled a little bit in C++, but I'm going to be honest it's a b-word. Otherwise I've been looking a little bit at Rust and OCaml for the heck of it. I played around with Prolog a bit one weekend, and I enjoyed playing around with that a lot since I really enjoy symbolic logic, but it seems like more of a playground language that new languages folded in than anything actually useful.

A lot of the learning process has been viaosmosis and picking up the gist of things by going through GitHub. That's been most beneficial imo.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Really dabbling in a lot of languages there lmao

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah, there's probably a better way to go about it practically by either just mastering JavaScript or Python instead of being decent, and then thinking more about Rust/OCaml/C++ as legit considerations instead of divesting some time reading up. But it's enjoyable to sort of bounce around and get more of a general grounding.

I look at it a little like how if you have a Ford and you have to fix Ford, then you'll get really good at getting the gists of Fords, Lincolns, and Mercurys. But if you have a whole garage of cars of different makes that you can toy around with and see all of the little quirks, then you're not going to be getting that toolkit a professional would have, but you'll be reasonably equipped for adapting to quirks of systems or whatnot as far as flexibility and knowing which make does what best.

Though, I'll be honest, it's too early to where I can't tell if the legos generalist mindset cross-applies to coding. My approach might be the flat out wrong one.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Whats your end goal for learning programming? Are you trying to actually build things, understand how computers work, maybe both?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

More of the former than the latter, but ultimately both. It's part hobbyist, part wanting to learn more. But there's still the thing where in the long run, as LLMs become more prominent and more jobs have core aspects digitized, that I'd rather get ahead of the curve. Not sure if that makes sense. But it's essentially one part peepeeing around and making crap that uses APIs or is just gimmicky, and then another part trying to get somewhat of a grounding to broaden my skillset.

Haha the ExpressJS team doesn't like self promotion? They get really annoyed whenever someone suggests removing the stupid “X-Powered-By: Express” header they inject into every HTTP response. Why is :marseywebshit: self-promotion good but :marseychudindian: self-promotion bad, hmm? :marseyhmm:

Just think of it this way: we give you Express.js for free and in return "trick" you into giving us credit for our hard work or you have to put 1 line of code in your application, which is already code and your developers should understand how to code when using Express.js. :soycry:

To be fair, the X-Powered-By header isn't a huge security issue on its own, it would only help against unusually stupid skiddies who first scan for that specific header and only then start sending requests to a server because they think they have a specific exploit. It's technically sending unnecessary bytes over a network though
