The real reason wayland will never surpass X11 - [Solved]

!codecels is this true?

I got it from this random thread https://kiwifarms.st/threads/175606/ about a dude who hates orange site and declared that his Hyprland project is "toxic" and transphobic after pulling the plug on it.

Not only have I never use wayland, I've never seen anyone else use it either. It's existence is purely theoretical at this this

Wayland is an excellent choice for Debian bookworm users

It's default for fedora and runs okay. It was a janky piece of shit about four years ago. :marseyshrug:

I used Fedora for a bit back in the day. I think it was Fedora 21 with GNOME that stripped out X11 for Wayland which at the time wasn't supported by most systems. That was the last time I used Fedora.

I tried wayland once and lol noped back to X11 after finding stuff like this.

It's a feature request from 2016(!) asking for support for saving a layout. I personally currently have 24 windows open and I do not want to spend 15 minutes manually arranging them every single time I restart my computer. It seems like other people have similar opinions considering how that thread has been getting comments for the past 8 years. The tools are there already, you can run a command and get back your exact window layout. All you would need to do is save that in JSON or whatever and then match to window title when you restart, or process ID, or a million other ways it could be implemented. Easy fix, right? But lol no, the dev refuses to budge on it, and no one can get a good reason out of him why. Just stubborn r-slurred neurodivergent arbitrary resistance against this single feature.

Meanwhile i3 is great and X11 works without any problem, so yeah frick that shit.

Drew DeVault is a stubborn r-slurred neurodivergent. He's your standard prog liar/bully who says everything not to his liking is phobic, even though I believe he is (currently) a straight white man.

No good will come of of using any of his projects, unless they're forked.

i didn't even know the background on this, I'm kinda new to linux's desktop and when I did my setup I used kde plasma 5.. iirc i asked around and ended up going with Wayland (ig now with 6 it just defaults to that?)

are there no merge requests with the json technique or something? I thought the whole point of the culture is so that people can just contribute stuff.. this doesn't sound like something that can accidentally make a security hole lol

I think you'd have to just fork the entire project.

Dev's official response:

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1711111209043618.webp

I found a couple of pull requests like https://github.com/swaywm/sway/pull/3022 but since he refuses to cooperate properly, people have just started 3rd party projects, but the best you can do then is essentially the equivalent of a bash script emulating keypresses which is messy, overcomplicated, and limited in what you can do.

This is worth reading too if you're interested about wayland generally

saved since I'm in the middle of reading something rn

but to the point.. that's wild, he doesn't need to be having the main repo then.. it's hard to believe it's just one guy calling the shots for community contributions, with a project this big.

like that's the whole darn point idgi idk might make more sense after i get to read what u linked

If you are invested in it, you might look at hyperland. It's a sway fork that is much more open to whatever features contributors want to cram in

Protip: Ignore anyone bitching about any of the following

  • systemd

  • Gnome

  • Wayland

There's nothing wrong with using alternatives to these, but the primary motivation for bitching is "It's different and I am too old to change," and all the technical complaints are grasping at straws. I use wayland on Debian bookworm and I have my desktop arrange all my windows on startup, so this isn't even a real constraint

Wrong, I use weird and niche screen capture tools and IT JEST WERKS on x11 whilr waylandcels just yell about compositor this and safety that. Sounds fake and ghey

It's been a few years since I've had any screensharing issues on Wayland. It was mostly an issue with apps switching to ask before capturing the whole desktop rather than just letting it happen (without even indicating to the user that it's happening).

Yeah Wayland, and Gnome are a meme.

While I see the problem with systemd I also don't really understand why no one's bothered taking advantage of it and making a sort of 'user friendly' control panel equivalent for linux other than the YAST2 which is still rather technical if you aren't versed in the lingo.

The reason why you never cared about this until now is that Wayland, unlike X11 where there's an actual piece of software everyone uses called X11 is actually a spec that gets implemented by every DE or WM independently. As a result the experience you get with Wayland is highly dependent on what DE you actually use.

If I recall the problem with Wayland is that it took security to the extreme at some point where you couldn't even drag and drop files from a place to another. Since this would've been back when GNOME users still didn't have a functional file picker and had to drag and drop from their actual file manager onto whatever piece of shit they wanted to use that file in, this was a somewhat bigger deal. I think they've done some workarounds to fix this, but at the same time these workarounds basically eliminate any added security wayland would've added. If you're a g*mer, some games just run like shit on Wayland for some reason and there's no solution but to go back to X11.

In all honesty Wayland will simply not replace X11 because X11 is legacy software that everyone took took to understand as a standard, and Wayland's ability to run programs that expect X11 (most of them) is either managable or in the case of games severely lacking.

Why?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

cause one developer doesnt want to re-implement an i3 feature? sway has better IPC so you could just do this with another program, which is what the dev said and people did

I do not care about this drama because I do not use tiling window managers. As I prefer to actually use my computer without neurodivergentally setting up my own pseudo DE.

The people working on Wayland are https://X.org devs. Its essentially in maintenance mode and the people who know where the bodies are buried don't want to dev for it any more.

Jump in the discussion.

yeah its like 95% finished but this is just some random small DE dying. boomers to chud out about wayland when it's not 1:1 with x11 and they have to learn some small thing

It's always had issues for me and screensharing has been a pain. The security oriented backend seems to restrict its capabilities and the "solution" is a myriad of tools to ghetto rig those features in.

Eh I always get weird issues whenever I try it. Probably my fault for having a NoVideo card but still. It won't recognize proper refresh rate on my monitor, I get weird glitchy text in scrollable menus like on steam, it's just so fricked ip for me and I want to use it but just can't handle the issues.
