Non competes should go both ways, you can't work anywhere else also they can't fire you

From what I've seen, they were barely enforceable before this anyway. It was mostly just a scare tactic.

They were plenty enforceable lol the company just needed to follow some steps. For example, by continuing to pay you your full salary for the entire duration of the non-compete.

It's the shit like slapping hairdressers with non-competes that was unenforceable.

Like anything in the US, it mostly depended on the state, but the general rule was that they couldn't prevent you from earning a living. In most cases, to enforce a non-compete in court, they had to demonstrate that you used some information you gained while working at company X to company Y's advantage in your new role. That can be easy to do for sales droids or people in R&D roles, but for the average codecel, not so much.

Even in sales, no one I ever signed was worth much besides a shit ton of legal fees

Excellent news! It's stuff like this that actually help the workers, not all the minimum wage nonsense.

Isn't it in all industries? It's a big deal for doctors since now they can open up a private practice way easier/go to a competing hospital. May improve wages (doubt it though since the hospital admin fricks always find a loophole)

Didn't they do a thing where they actually sued a bunch of workers who found a better job elsewhere and made them work at the radiology department

Wouldn't surprise me, evil frickers. Doctors can also get fired with no notice because they'll claim you were "endangering safety"

Does this void existing non-competes?

Edit: sounds like it does

:#marseyparty:

Actually this is pretty nice.

Oh lol shit, was about to ask. I wonder if it kills ongoing litigation over non-competes.

I'm in favor of this but at the same time i understand why non-competes exist. I work in a somewhat niche industry where we dominate the market and other companies constantly poach our employees so they can try to catch up.

But also there's more to being successful than just knowing how we do our job. May the best man win, and that's how it should be

Seems like this can only be good for consumers and markets.

It's absolutely a good thing, but if I was a rich elite business owner I would have stuffed the pockets of these people to make sure it doesn't become illegal

But if that knowledge is valuable enough, the big dogs will further silo-ize all the things.

I'm very surprised the FTC is capable of passing a good law like this. non-competes are r-slurred and policy in California likely played a role in Silicon Valley's success.
