7Zip is objectively better

Don't think I've ever been in a situation where I need to benchmark my compression software. Are you automating stuff or compressing absurdly huge files?

mostly doesn't matter on the individual scale (it does cross-platform), but on the global scale slight improvements mean a lot.

Thanks, Alan Turing. That's why I asked if he was automating compressions or was dealing with large files.

Thanks and I was answering that the answer is likely "no" and has been for quite some years, but that it still matters. Trying to add to the conversation, you know? Maybe a lurker learns something. I didn't realize you were into Patrick Tomlinson's personal lore about compression THAT much...

>yeah, I was explaining that it isn't a scale thing. It's just a global thing :marseytheorist:

.7zip has its own file format .7z thats more compressed than .rar and 7zip can also open .rar files

I don't want to sound like I'm making stuff up when a broad finally asks what dictionary size and how many threads I use.

What are you compressing tho? :marseyhmm:

If it's images, music or videos you might save a tiny bit on the metadata but they're already going to maximally compressed due to using their specific image, audio or video codecs. :marseysquished:

If you're compressing text (really the only thing that will get great compression ratios) then 7z LZMA2 with maxed out options should get you the smallest file. :marseytiny4:

The other thing is though is Zstandard compression is becoming very popular because it gets decent compression ratios but is orders of magnitude faster to decompress. :marseypenguin:

Kind of hard to justify waiting another 30 minutes for a couple megabyte savings when a hard drives are so cheap $/TB. :marseyshrug:

I mean I don't see a reason to stop using WinRAR if it works. :marseyshrug:

Depending how nerdy you want to be and how much you want to spend you could get a Synology or make a file server with ZFS. Both would support transparent compression and give you a centralized place to backup your files.

Lossless generic compression like 7z or rar isn't magic tho, compressing an already compressed video file isn't going to get you much savings- if you're unlucky it could bloat it due to extra container metadata.

If it's too big you're gonna need to reduce the quality.

Like you said, we value saving 30+ minutes to decompress more than saving a few megabytes. That is a functional mindset

A tech spec cel will always choose :marseyvalentine: the smallest compression :marseysquished: regardless of speed because it's the "best"
