I have worked with carbon data related to consumption before and it is the most snake oil bullshit industry you have ever seen.

Mostly they have no idea or extrapolate carbon data from completely different regions or countries. This means maybe buying a certain bean is considered super eco friendly because their only data is a short drive from the farm to a big city in Ukraine, but they flew them to you in USA so it's bullshit)

People also just straight up lie and no one challenges the data, they have targets to meet on bullshit no one is collecting proper metrics for, and they know no one checks it so they put down whatever sounds good.

You can also "eco offset" your products by buying areas of rainforest to say you saved x trees, these same patches of rainforest are sold 100s of times.

The whole concept of carbon offsets is ridiculous. Company claims to simulate how much carbon a region would've emitted, intervenes in some way (e.g. paying farmers not to cut down trees), then sells the difference as an offset.

Who verifies their simulation? Who checks those farmers didn't cut the trees down anyway? Who checks those farmers ever intended to cut the trees down in the first place? Everyone at every stage has a financial incentive to lie, and to cover up everyone else's lies. It's bullshit all the way down.

I 100% believe that, I assume most of this stuff is a grift or communism related.
