Gangster tactics : Cloudflare took down our website after trying to force us to pay 120k$ within 24h :marseyscared: :marseyglow:

We've been on the Cloudflare Business plan ($250/month) for years. They suddenly contacted us and asked us to either pay them $120k up front for one year of Enterprise within 24 hours or they would take down all of our domains. While this escalated up our business we had 3 sales calls with them, trying to figure out what was happening and how to reach a reasonable contract in a week. When we told them we were also in talks with Fastly, they suddenly "purged" all our domains, causing huge downtime in our core business, sleepless nights migrating away from CF, irreparable loss in customer trust and weeks of ongoing downtime in our internal systems.

fairly large online casino

This little detail is probably relevant, because if they're using CF to circumvent bans then they've got to expect a shakedown.

That was my guess. They got caught in some shady shit and violated some country's laws and CF is pissed.

Think CF was trying to fix a glitch. At $250 a month they were definitely losing money n

This isn't that uncommon with cloudflare. It looks like their plans allow for heavy use with basic features so you can get away with a lot. I wonder if there's management issues there

Make sure you understand the impact of CF's business model on you: Either you're leeching off Cloudflare (customers on the free/business plan), or Cloudflare is leeching off you (intransparent Enterprise pricing). There is no in-between, and at some point the time comes to switch.

The relevant bit

It's in the playbook of every cloud service provider available today

  • (I think this article is relevant regardless of whether you think that in general casinos are ethical or not, I'm just mentioning it for context). We have around 4 million monthly active users. We had been happy Cloudflare customers since 2018 on the "Business" plan which has some neat features and costs $250/month for "unlimited" traffic.

Lemme guess. These cheap butt BIPOCs didn't want to pay more for their users' activity, and CF was looking to dump them anyway for being a pain in the butt.

We do have multiple domains that mostly act as mirrors to our main domain. We have these for a few reasons. One is that since we are a casino, we have different regulatory requirements we need to comply with in many countries.

So they get contacted for "domain rotation," and he's already bullpooping us with "oh uhhh look no we were, but uh okay we were, we just use this convoluted way of limiting what can be seen on a per country basis."

:marseysurejan:

This neighbor needs his kneecaps busted in.

This also means that if a country DNS-blocks our main domain, a secondary domain may still be available. This could arguably be seen as a violation of the Cloudflare TOS, as they wrote above.

:marseyshook:

The lying piece of shit finally admits the truth??

Good lord, he's such a whiny b-word throughout the article.

If they think you are flakey (maybe if you have alternatives?), they will give you an unreasonable deadline and force you into paying the year up front.

Oh noooo! They don't want to deal with your illegal shit in other countries unless you compensate them for the shit they'll have to deal with!? Ohh my god, the nerve of them! And this "SysOps" nerd was bullpooping then for weeks about it until they finally cut off service??? Oh nooo! Poor little guy.

:marseycry:

OP, how did you find this? This guy needs to be kicked in the balls.

Fun fact: no company has ever been able to produce an AI which can consistently distinguish between monkeys and black people. Self-driving cars are here, so are universal voice translators, self-aiming guns, and pocket-computers which can recognize every single product in a live video. But distinguishing between monkeys and black people is as difficult as solving a millenium prize problem, teams of PHD computer scientists will be working on it for decades before they get a solution which works well enough to be media-outrage-proof.

When someone finally finds the solution, they won't be make headlines, but they'll be happy knowing they solved the AI problem of the century. They'll tell normies that they just fiddle around with facial recognition algorithms all day, but to people in the know, he'll be known as "Tom, the absolute genius who spent 26 years teaching google images how to tell blacks apart from apes".

I'm not an administrator so maybe I don't understand something but he admitted to breaking their TOS - doing stuff (the multiple domains thing) for which he needs the enterprise plan - and then acting shocked when they threw them out once they realised they were stalling while switching to a competitor? :marseyemojirofl: Once you look past the victimy language that's what it looks like to me. The only shitty thing from Cloudflare I see here is the pretending there's a problem to set up a call with Sales but that could be the OP bullpooping
