It's kinda insane to me that they only had two uncrewed missions before this, one of which failed almost entirely, another succeeded with multiple thrusters failing. And they were given a go ahead to send the crew up, probably because it would take another two years before the next attempt otherwise. Absolutely insane compared to how SpaceX does things.
