Ordered a cheapish 1tb Kingston m.2 SSD on amazon. Delayed twice because of prime day and then crowdstrike.
It finally arrived today and it looks like the inner packaging (not the padded amazon mailer, the kingston-branded cardboard-and-plastic thing) got run over by a truck repeatedly. The plastic around the drive is dented and scratched to shit and the cardboard is bent in 4 different places. Seriously, it looks like someone picked it up off of the warehouse floor after a forklift went over it.
This is, to put it lightly, very annoying. I'm already getting the parts for this build a week later than originally advertised thanks to prime day and crowdstrike, and now I will probably have to wait another week for a new SSD.
I'm still waiting on several other parts and I'm debating whether to wait for them to arrive to test, or to take apart one of my laptops with an m.2 slot tonight just to make sure the darn thing is at least recognized by the bios.
Edit: bit the bullet and tested it in a project laptop, and it was at least recognized by the bios. Will have to wait for the rest of the parts to test for further problems.

Three times in a row I ordered carnauba wax from them, which comes in tins like this
and three times in a row the lid popped off during transport, getting wax all over the box. I kept asking for replacements, which were granted, yet they kept sending them the same exact way. I finally gave up on the third one, figuring I have 3 semi-full tins anyway and got my money's worth.

I actually do have a 512gb m.2 I could try this with but it's the boot drive of the computer I'm typing this comment on lol
Plus I'd still be SOL for the build I'm trying to finish
And I think it's fairly obviously branded SK Hynix, although I suppose the wagies probably wouldn't notice

SK Hynix makes this P41 Platinun NVMe drive which is faster and cheaper than the Samsung 990 Pro. They're a great company and have been advancing steadily in the storage sector.

Yeah I have zero complaints with the drive; I just know I'm eventually gonna run out of space on it since it's only half a terabyte. Still have a ways to go before that happens though.

id atleast keep your ssd around for a week and make sure ur important data is pm a stable external backup (i prefer hdds for data backups)

I think I'm just gonna RMA it if it's broken without any funny business, but mostly because the build isn't even for me. If it were my own personal use build I'd probably try it.

I cancelled my subscription years ago, but they never cancelled it, so I've been charged around $200+ for a service I never used. I'm thinking of doing the same thing but with a $500 GPU.

@LemonScore accidently got some free USB sticks when @LemonScore reported @LemonScore's order as not having arrived. It turned out that the person delivering them just tossed them over the gate into @LemonScore's back garden and @LemonScore didn't realise @LemonScore had them. If I'd found them before the replacement arrived @LemonScore would have cancelled it because @LemonScore is not a thief though but @LemonScore didn't

Similar thing happened to me when I ordered some cable ties one time; they accidentally sent me somebody else's nail polish and I assumed the two orders got mixed up so I requested replacement; 2 days later both the original cable tie order AND the replacement were delivered simultaneously They told me to keep the nail polish lol

I'm pretty sure behavior like that helped catapult them to dominance. Their customer service was miles ahead of other online retailers let alone brick and mortar

Amazon's pricing blows now too it's actually cheaper for me to buy local
Jump in the discussion.

Seriously, their prices skyrocketed during covid and never came down. It's at the point where the cheap Chinese tat with names like WUXKIKIUSU cost as much or more than name brands

Fr? If I go to the local Best Buy I'm still surprised they can overcharge substantially for the same* product. It's kind of a shit hole now too, they were straight up closing at 7pm until recently they never keep the shelves stocked or tidy and the employees either know nothing and will just lie to you.
*"actually the model number isn't the same so I can't price match that

The USA probably has better pricing. I've gone to local big box stores and paid $10 less or more for home goods than I would have on Amazon, same with some computer parts

I went to the best buy in my hometown for the first time in several years to buy a SSD for one of my parents' 12 year old desktops they refuse to replace a little while ago and the place was unrecognizable. Nothing worth more than $30 and smaller than a TV was kept out on the shelves, so 80% of the store was placeholder pamphlets you had to take to the counter so that the wagies could fetch the item from the back. One of the two entrances was blocked off, and they were asking $55 for a cheapo 480gb SATA ssd.
This was not in a rough part of town. I was really confused by the extreme antitheft measures. Is this just considered normal in all midsize cities post-2020?

Perhaps? Maybe that was particularly poorly staffed so they didn't want to do stocking? Mine had some slips but it was mostly for big ticket items like PS5s or MacBooks.
Pricing is right though, I guess they've given up trying to compete and just wanna get the last suckers who don't buy tech online.
I completely agree on the unrecognizable too. I used to pop in with my nerdy friends and we'd window shop new consumer tech all the time, there's like zero interesting devices there now.

Neighbor have you ever heard of amazon? Who tf is buying PARTS in a brick and mortar store?

Read the OP lol
I was visiting my parents and couldn't wait 2 days for the part to arrive so I figured I'd try using the brick and mortar store for the one reason they still exist, the ability to walk out with the part 10 minutes after I decide I need the part.

I got counterfeit or simply the wrong item a few times and I've stopped using Amazon when I can. Canceled prime and I order from other places, I still sometimes order from Amazon but it's more of a last resort.

You're lucky it's even an authentic drive and not a knock off
Btw Kingston isn't a great brand, WD, Samsung, Crucial are better

Yeah this is very much a low budget build that will be upgraded later on (mobo has 2x m.2 slots and there's also an old samsung sata ssd that will be plugged in initially for backups and whatnot). Reusing an oldish but still good PSU and case and old GPU brought the total part cost down to $300.
