What is different about an artist learning to paint by studying the styles of hundreds of artists.... and an AI doing the same? I mean I get why you couldn't copyright it, but I always failed to see the legal case that artists are making when they claim "THIS AI WAS TRAINED ON MY ART!"

This is my argument. There is a decent rebuttal I think if the AI is too close to what it was trained on. It isn't uncommon for artists to get in trouble for tracing and I think AI has a decent chance of generating images that are close enough to what it was trained on to be iffy. But I fail to see how training the AI is copyright theft at all.
