arguing that the Linux kernel was too closely tied to the x86 line of processors to be of any use in the future, as this architecture would be superseded by then

Fricking low-level autismo-programming nerd absolutely destroyed by market forces because they don't have a holistic understanding of computing that includes what manufacturing can make cheap and what customers want.

Honestly pretty funny that 30 years on ARM is starting to take over, but mostly on Linux-based OS platforms (Android, OSx)

You are on the same level as calling Linux GNU/Linux.

Everyone knows what they meant to say was that it was based on Unix.

Tanenbaum's OS, Minix, is also a Unix-like OS. This isn't what the debate was about.

Imagine not having access to your own 386 in 1992. And by that I mean your dad's where you had to be really careful not to accidentally overwrite his saved games.

The debate opened on January 29, 1992, when Tanenbaum first posted his criticism on the Linux kernel to comp.os.minix, noting how the monolithic design was detrimental to its abilities, in a post titled "LINUX is obsolete".[1]

Right from the start.

The best part of that whole event is that he was back like five days later, having decided that was sufficient time. It left the orange website completely dumbfounded: the whiners who that thought they'd slain the disagreeable deplorable & his rage-enforced competency standards didn't know how to react when the witch returned and declared himself cured. Their entire playbook seemed to rely on him wallowing in self-exile for eternity.

Shoving COCs into codebases. Codebussy, if you will. (N.B.: this is distinct from codecel bussy, which is often depilated and accompanied by thigh socks.)

Torvalds attempted to end the discussion at that point, stating that he felt he should not have overreacted to Tanenbaum's initial statements, and that he was composing a personal email to him to apologise

Re 2: your job is being a professor and researcher: That's one heck of a good excuse for some of the brain-damages of minix. I can only hope (and assume) that Amoeba doesn't suck like minix does.

MINIX is basically dead at this point, not that it was ever an interesting microkernel in the first place, Torvalds stays winning.

Choice historical drama for sure.

interesting microkernel

It's very interesting from an educational standpoint.

Not with 3.

Even if you want to use the old versions for pure educational purposes, it’s written for a C compiler no one uses.

xv6 might be better suited, although it lacks the micro kernel stuff and is also written in outdated C.

As most of you know, for me MINIX is a hobby, something that I do in the evening when I get bored writing books and there are no major wars, revolutions, or senate hearings being televised live on CNN

Fuuuck I couldn't keep reading past that. I wanna punch this fricking nerd so hard
