Why is this phrased like this? Silicone isn’t used in semiconductor because it’s the best, it’s used cause it’s really cheap. “Just making it profitable” isn’t some minor step, it’s most of the process. Tesla already uses SiC and GaN is also magnitudes of times better than just Si, it’s just not profitable enough (yet) to compete with Si.

I learned about GaN semiconductors in high school chemistry class and it still isn’t used in appreciable volume; yet another technically-impressive-but-economically-infeasible semiconductor is not gonna shake up the market.

I had a whole college class with 2 teachers where one of them actually taught power electronics and the other just shilled his GaN semiconductor company for 10 lectures. I looked how much a MOS switch from this company cost and it was $50 for ONE.

We’ll probably see non Si semiconductor in our lifetime, but I d guess it’s be a hot second
