Both the other entries (True Velocity poly cased ammo in a bullpup, Textrons Cased Telescopic ammo) were neater and would have actually been revolutionary developments in weapons tech. The Sig entry is a compromise in every way.

"It can penetrate Level 4 Plates without tungsten cores" was a cope they had to make up to keep the project going after they lost the real reason. The NGSW program is another case of trying to fight the last war and old generals joining the "Cult of the Rifleman": It was drawn up as a rifle for fighting in Afghanistan, and the continued meme that "We'll just train every soldier to be an expert marksman on the range, we won't need suppression and fire superiority, because they'll kill the enemy before they can get to cover." It will never work that way in actual combat conditions.

Now we have a rifle that weighs 11.5 lbs empty, the troops will carry 40% less ammo for nearly the same weight*, and the SAW version is gonna burn through barrels because the ammo has 80k PSI chamber pressure and the barrel is not changeable in the field.

* Sigs fricking cope ammo gets its own category. In order to get the velocities required without making the gun longer than the contract allowed, Sig cranked the chamber pressure up to Somewhere between "Bubba's Hot Load" and "Oops, All Powder"

In order to keep the cases from exploding they had to use their stupid two piece design, replacing the case head with a thicker stainless steel one. Then they market it as "X% reduction in weight" which is implied to be versus 7.62x51 ammo, but it's versus "Comparable Ammo". The ammo that they're comparing to are magnum rifle rounds like .338 Norma or .338 Lapua. Of course it's fricking lighter, it's 13mm shorter with a smaller bullet.
